SQUARE
We began searching for an idea through brain storming our usual habits and attitudes throughout the day in order to pick up the difference between our lifestyles – Spanish and Polish. We wanted to somehow incorporate these in our project and combine the warmth of home with the adventurous journey of an Erasmus experience. One of the many differences included particularly the mentality towards socialising with others. In Spain it is very common to go out few times a week in order to socialise with friends in bars or pubs, share tapas or dance. In Poland however, people mainly socialise at homes or through cultural activities such as going to theatres. Another important difference is the “day clock” – In Spain people usually begin their days later but are very active during night times, in Poland however people start their days early but are also going to bed at times when Spanish are having their dinners.
The transformation process began with measuring the dimensions of the room, drawings of the plan and sketches of ideas. We also decided to define the strengths and weaknesses and possible solutions that we would like to apply to the room. The elements we wanted to focus on included: uncomfortable desk, raised entrance towards the balcony, position of bed, place for shoes and edges on the walls and ceiling.
We saw the edges as a weakness at the beginning, however as our project was developing and we gained more inspirations we saw them as an opportunity and decided to multiply them in the room. Inspired by the drawings of Esher, an idea emerged. We decided to blend the difference between the walls, the ceiling and the floor to create an illusion. We created steps of different heights, which are multifunctional – they can be creating a “square” to socialize with friends, as well as a relaxing space for sitting or lying down next to the balcony and also a working space resolving the problem of uncomfortable desk. We also covered the furniture with a white material, blending the difference and following the idea of illusion inspired by Esher. Shelves are covered with a tutu material, so that guests would not feel uncomfortable as invading the privacy when entering the room.
Our final project is a merge of the warmth of home and privacy along with the Spanish social aspects highlighting the Erasmus adventure – a square.
